HOW TO AVOID SWIMMING POOL and SPA DAMAGE IN THE COLDER MONTHS

The months between freezing winter and the thaw of spring are the perfect time for damage to occur to your clients’ swimming pools and spas.

Homeowners can become complacent with their pool maintenance, allowing problems to not only begin, but to remain unaddressed until they want to use their pools later in the year.
Encouraging your clients to keep up pool maintenance will help reduce damage from occurring, thereby reducing claims that are made for pool repairs. Here are some gentle reminders to pass on to your clients, so they can take care of their pools from now until spring.

Check Pool Covers Throughout Winter Months

During the winter months, pool covers can be damaged when snow, rain, or debris are allowed to remain or pile up on the cover. The heavy weight of snow can cause a cover to break, and most pool covers are not designed to hold an extreme amount of weight. Pool covers should be kept clear of snow and debris, and should be checked after rain to ensure that the cover is properly in place. In addition, keeping the pool cover clear will help ensure that rainwater, debris, and melted snow do not fall into the pool water when the pool is opened in the spring.  Rain water and melted snow can upset the chemical balance in the pool water, which can cause staining and damage to a swimming pool liner.

Fires, Hurricanes, Tornadoes and Floods

Tips to give your clients:

Fires

As the fires rage all over California we have received many calls about what to do about soot and ash in swimming pools. This collateral damage is minor compared to what many people are experiencing. Our hearts go out to all affected.

Swimming pools in fire areas will contain ash, debris, toxins and possibly firefighting chemicals. In areas very close to fire the pool may have to be drained and refilled. If you are lucky enough to just have residual ash, your claims will be quick and easy.

  • Remove all larger debris in the pool as soon as possible. Brush all surfaces thoroughly. Skim smaller material with a net.

Summer Pool Maintenance Tips

Summer Pool Maintenance Tips

Swimming Pool Inspection Services gives you tips on keeping your pool in tiptop shape this summer.

Pool Maintenance During Summer Swim Season

Warmer weather and more frequent use can result in dirt, debris, and algae growth in a pool during the summer. Because of this it is important for homeowners to ramp up their pool maintenance routine during the summer by following these tips:

Dry Off and Store Pool Cover

A pool cover that is rolled up when wet and left in the sun can become easily damaged. Algae and moss can grow in warm, wet environments, and a plastic or vinyl cover that’s left to bake in the sun can become brittle and easily end up tearing. Covers should be dried off and stored in a cool, dry place, out of the sun for the duration of the swimming season.

Mudslides and What They Do To Pools

How Mudslides affect Pools

In December 2018 we had fire and rain.  This is not a good combination.  There were many neighborhoods that had mandatory evacuations, 1st for the fires and then because of the fear of mudslides and floods. Unfortunately when the rain stopped there was mud going down the middle of the street and into the neighborhood houses and pools. We, of course as of today, are not out of the woods yet. We find ourselves once again with this problem.
I thought I would give some useful information about mudslides and their impact on swimming pools when they get into them.

Proper Winterization for Swimming Pools, HOT TUBS AND SPAS

With autumn and winter just around the corner, Swimming Pool Inspection Services has seen many in-ground and above-ground swimming pools sustain damage because they were not properly winterized for the cold months.

Pool Care in Autumn

During the autumn months, when trees shed their leaves, and the weather begins to change, pools are at risk for damage from leaves, pollen, and other debris. The first step to winterizing a pool is to make sure the pool and pool water are clean. Skim the pool for leaves and debris, and run the filtration system to ensure that pollen and dirt are not allowed to remain in the pool during the winter.  Allowing pollen and dirt to remain in the pool during the winter months can result in staining to a pool liner that may require professional service to undo.
Because the pool will be getting less use in autumn, the pump can be run less frequently, and homeowners may be able to use fewer chemicals, thereby saving money. The important thing to remember about pool care in autumn is to keep leaves and debris out of the pool. Skimming may need to be done more often than it was in the summer, but the rest of the pool maintenance routine should ease up some.

It’s not to late to winterize and make sure the pool is covered

Swimming pool covers are extremely important for maintaining a pool and preventing damage from occurring.

Having a properly installed and utilized swimming pool cover will ensure that the pool is protected from the elements and ready to use when uncovered. Here are just a few reasons why a cover is recommended for a well-maintained pool:

Reduces Evaporation

Every day that a pool is exposed to the air, evaporation occurs. This results in higher water costs. Additionally, a lower water level can cause damage to the parts of the pool that are exposed to the air. Tile, plaster, and vinyl in a pool should not be exposed to air; doing so can cause them to crack, dry out, and become brittle.
